This is a story about when Granny and Grandad’s two children were much younger, when Danny was having his sixth birthday. His big sister, Maddy, was eight years old and so she helped him to write the invitations to his birthday party…but she wrote the names of all her friends on them instead so Danny was the only boy at his own party. He started to cry so Granny had to phone his friends up.
Finally, Danny’s own friends arrived but they didn’t get on with the girls. Every time they played a game there would be a big argument. The magician arrived but he couldn’t remember the magic words. Everyone jumped on the Bouncy Castle at once and it popped - the party was a disaster! Next it was time for the party food. Granny was looking forward to a bit of peace and quiet while they were eating but the children were very fussy. One of the boys threw a sandwich at one of the girls! There was an almighty fight…with balloons and sandwiches and buns flying everywhere. What horrible children! Granny tried to calm things down but she didn’t have much luck…and Grandad was nowhere to be seen.
Suddenly there was a very loud noise and everyone stopped. Right there, in the middle of the room, Granny had burst into tears. Now the children realised how badly they had behaved and they felt very sorry that they had upset Granny. Carefully they started to tidy up the mess that they had made. They weren’t looking forward to eating burnt cake but they wanted to cheer Granny up so they pretended that they loved it. Just as they were about to eat it, the doorbell went again. It was Grandad – with the biggest birthday cake you could ever imagine! Even Granny couldn’t help smiling when she saw that it was made of jam AND cream. And so everyone sang Happy Birthday to Danny and tucked into the cake. Maybe it wasn’t such a bad party after all!
