Granny’s very first job was working at the circus. She wanted to be a dancer but they already had too many so she had to sell the tickets instead.
One morning, one of the clowns started sneezing. By lunchtime all of the clowns were sneezing! The clowns were too ill to do the show so the ringmaster asked Granny if she would do it. The magician’s assistant wasn’t feeling very well either... and then the acrobats started to feel dizzy…and the tightrope walkers had bad coughs! Even the lion had a sore throat and couldn’t roar properly. There was only one person who could do all of the jobs – Granny! She was very excited about her first circus show but she was a bit scared as well.
Granny put on a funny wig and started juggling with eggs. All the boys and girls thought she was very funny. Then she put on a mask and stood on one leg. She wobbled a bit but nobody noticed. Everybody thought she was very good. Granny put on a sparkly tiara and helped the magician do his magic tricks. Everybody was very impressed and gave her a big clap. Next it was time for the tightrope. Everybody held their breath. Granny was very scared because it was such a long way down! Last of all, Granny got dressed up like a lion and had to jump through a hoop of flames. She was very worried in case she set fire to her tail! At last it was the end of the show. Granny was so tired that she fell asleep as soon as she got into bed.
The next morning the ringmaster was up bright and early to check on his clowns. Everybody else was feeling better as well. Having a day off had made everybody well again. They wanted to say thank you to Granny but she had been working so hard that she was still snoring! Everybody crept away quietly and left her to sleep.
