Everyone in the village was very excited. It was soon to be the Village Fair which meant there would be lots of competitions and lots of prizes. All the ladies in Granny’s street wanted to make sure that they baked the best cakes. They spent hours and hours making sure their strawberry jam was perfect. Whenever the sun was shining they would be out in the garden, working hard to paint the most beautiful picture you could imagine and while the paint was drying they would be training their dogs for the dog show. But nobody wanted to win the competitions quite as much as Granny did.
The big day finally came. There were lots of exciting things for people to do and the most delicious things to eat. Everyone waited for the judges to announce the winners but Granny didn’t win any of her competitions. Granny was so desperate to win something that she joined in with the children’s races as well! First it was the egg and spoon race, then the skipping race. She even made Grandad join in with the three-legged race! They still didn’t win though and Granny wasn’t happy at all. She wanted to go home but Grandad made her stay a bit longer.
Then they announced the winner of the competition for the most beautiful roses – it was Grandad! Granny didn’t even know he had entered any competitions. He gave the cup to Granny – finally, after all these years, she had a big shiny cup… and an even bigger smile to go with it!
